Naches Trail

Pioneer wagon route through Cascade wilderness

Moderate

The Naches Trail cuts through Washington’s Cascade Range along the same route pioneers took crossing into Puget Sound in the 1850s. This 40-mile backcountry road follows the Yakima River drainage system from Cliffdell to Chinook Pass, threading between towering peaks and old-growth forests. The trail crosses American River multiple times and passes remnants of the original wagon road, including sections of hand-stacked stone retaining walls built by early settlers.

Moderate difficulty with several water crossings and rocky sections that demand high-clearance 4WD. Summer only access due to snow closure at elevation — typically July through September. No permits required, but check Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest conditions before heading out. Dispersed camping available throughout, with established sites near American River. Fuel up in Naches before starting. The payoff is solitude, legitimate pioneer history, and some of the best alpine scenery Washington has to offer without the crowds.
