Provincial Road 384 — The Pas to Kelsey Hydro Dam via Summerberry Marsh

Nelson River hydro country, zero crowds.

Moderate

PR-384 cuts northeast from The Pas through some of the least-visited terrain in central Manitoba — a rolling corridor of black spruce, tamarack bogs, and the Summerberry River marsh where moose density is genuinely staggering in early morning. The road transitions from maintained gravel to progressively rougher two-track as it approaches the Nelson River corridor and the Kelsey Generating Station, one of Manitoba Hydro’s oldest dams. The section through the Summerberry lowlands is subject to seasonal flooding and can develop deep water channels across the road surface after heavy rain — worth checking before you commit. There are no services between The Pas and the hydro facility, and you will not see another vehicle for most of the run.

Stock high-clearance trucks can handle this route in dry summer conditions; after rain the soft clay shoulders become genuinely treacherous and a locker helps considerably. Fuel in The Pas — there’s nothing east of town on this corridor. Best season is late June through early September before freeze-up mud returns. Cell service is spotty leaving The Pas and gone entirely in the marsh sections. This is northern Manitoba boreal driving at its most honest — long, lonely, spectacular in a quiet way, and completely free of the tourist traffic that plagues better-known routes.
