Făgăraș Mountains — Bâlea Lac High Plateau Dispersed Camp

Dispersed Camping

The high ground surrounding Bâlea Lac sits above the tree line in the Făgăraș Mountains and is one of the few places in Romania where overlanders can legally bivouac in true alpine terrain. Flat gravel and short alpine grass offer spots for rooftop tents and ground setups alike. The lake itself, the cable car terminus, and the chalet are nearby but the dispersed zones away from the main tourist crush — especially east along the ridge approach tracks — give you solitude and jaw-dropping views down both sides of the Carpathians. No facilities. Nights are cold even in July.

Access via the Transfăgărășan (DN7C) is paved all the way to the lake but the road closes typically November through late June depending on snowpack — confirm current status with CNAIR before committing. High season (July–August) brings serious tourist traffic to the lake area itself; arrive early or push a few hundred meters off the main corridor. No open fires above the tree line. Pack out everything.
