Top Gear called it the best road in the world and, for once, the hyperbole lands. From Bâlea Lac — a cirque lake permanently ringed in cloud shadow — DN7C unscrews itself down the southern face of the Fagaraș Mountains through 90-odd switchbacks, past the Vidraru Reservoir dam, and out into the Argeș Valley. The northern wall is steeper and more dramatic; the southern descent is longer, with sheer rock on one side and a serious drop on the other. The Capra waterfall crossing is the signature waypoint — a narrow bridge with mist from the falls hitting your windscreen as you cross. Nicolae Ceaușescu ordered the road carved from the Carpathians using military labour in the 1970s. The human cost was brutal; the result is extraordinary.
The road is sealed tarmac but deeply honest — tight hairpins, no guardrails in sections, fast Romanian drivers passing into blind corners, and altitude weather that can swing from clear to whiteout inside an hour. No 4WD required, but respect is mandatory. The road is closed November through June most years — exact dates depend on snowpack and are posted by the Romanian Road Authority. No fuel between Curtea de Argeș and the top; fill before you climb. Mobile signal disappears at the summit and recovers only as you drop back into the valley. This is a drive that earns its reputation.
