Poenari Citadel — Vlad III’s Eagle’s Nest Fortress Above the Argeș Gorge
Forget Bran. Poenari is the one Vlad Țepeș actually built and used. Perched on a sheer limestone crag above the Argeș River canyon, this 13th-century citadel — reinforced by Vlad III in the 1400s using captured Ottoman labor — commands a gut-punch view down the entire gorge and north toward the high Făgăraș wall. You’ll climb 1,480 concrete steps cut into the cliff face to reach the ruins, but the payoff is total: jagged towers, sheer drops, and the kind of silence that makes sense of why someone built a fortress here in the first place.
Located right on the Transfăgărășan road, just south of the Vidraru Dam, this is a mandatory stop for anyone running the full traverse north-to-south. The site is managed by the Argeș County Museum and charges a small entry fee. Steps can be slick in wet weather. Season runs roughly April through October — the site closes in winter. Allow 2–3 hours roundtrip on foot.
1,480 steps to Vlad's real castle.
