Transfăgărășan Highway — Curtea de Argeș to Bâlea Lac via the Southern Carpathian High Crossing
Ceaușescu's mountain madness, paved.
Nicolae Ceaușescu blasted this road through the Southern Carpathians between 1970 and 1974 using military labour and enough dynamite to reshape a mountain range — 6 million kilograms of explosives by the official count. The result is 90 km of relentless switchbacks, waterfalls, and viaducts connecting Curtea de Argeș in Wallachia to Sibiu in Transylvania via Bâlea Lac at 2,042 m. The Vidraru Dam reservoir appears early and sets the tone: brutalist scale against alpine drama. The tunnel under Bâlea pass is cold, narrow, and leaks all summer. Above it, the road opens onto a glacial plateau that feels like the set of a Bond film — because it literally was one.
The road is only open roughly late June through late October, depending on snow. Two-wheel drive vehicles can technically complete the full route in dry conditions, but a high-clearance vehicle gives more confidence on steep descents when brake fade is real. No permit required. Watch for summer tourist gridlock near Bâlea Lac — go early morning or late evening. Fill fuel in Curtea de Argeș or Sibiu; there are no stations on the high section. The views from the top are genuinely world-class. Cold, windy, worth every kilometre.

Frequently asked questions
Can a stock sedan handle the Transfăgărășan, or do I need high-clearance?
A stock sedan can physically drive it — the road is paved — but steep switchbacks, rough patched sections, and the occasional rockfall debris make high-clearance and solid brakes a real advantage. If your car runs hot on long climbs or has low ground clearance, the southern ascent will stress-test both.
When does the Transfăgărășan open and close each year?
The high section between Bâlea Cascadă and Bâlea Lac typically opens late June and closes by late October or first heavy snowfall — whichever comes first. Check with the Romanian Roads Administration (andnet.ro) before you go; the date shifts year to year and closures happen fast when weather turns.
Are there any permits, tolls, or entry fees to drive it?
No permits required and no toll on the Transfăgărășan itself. Romania uses a national road vignette (rovinieta) for all vehicles, which you must have legally — buy it online or at border crossings before you drive anywhere in the country.
What's the hardest section and what should I actually expect?
The tight switchbacks on the southern face between Curtea de Argeș and the summit tunnel are the most demanding — steep gradient, narrow lanes, and tourist traffic that stops mid-road for photos. The 887-metre tunnel near the top is unlit, cold, and wet; run your headlights and watch for pedestrians walking through it on foot.
Is there anywhere to get fuel or supplies along the 90 km route?
Fuel up in Curtea de Argeș before you leave — there are no gas stations on the mountain section. Small vendors sell food near Bâlea Cascadă waterfall and at Bâlea Lac at the top, but prices are tourist-inflated and selection is thin. Carry water, snacks, and a full tank.
