Angostura Reservoir OHV Trail System
Technical reservoir wheeling with serious hill climbs
The Angostura Reservoir OHV Trail System winds through rugged terrain south of Hot Springs, offering technical challenges along the Cheyenne River arm of the reservoir. The trail network features steep hill climbs, rocky technical sections, and sandy washes that test vehicle capability. Key obstacles include the notorious “Widow Maker” hill climb and several creek crossings that can become impassable during spring runoff.
This is legitimate technical 4×4 territory requiring high-clearance vehicles with low-range transfer cases, recovery gear, and experienced drivers. Best tackled April through October when water levels are manageable. No permits required, but respect private land boundaries. The payoff includes excellent dispersed camping spots with reservoir views and some of the most challenging wheeling in western South Dakota.

Frequently asked questions
What kind of 4WD do I need for Angostura's technical sections?
You need 4WD with low-range transfer case, rock sliders, and skid plates minimum. The hill climbs and rocky sections will punish stock vehicles without proper protection and gearing.
Is the trail open during winter months?
Best season is April through October. Winter access can be sketchy due to snow and ice making the already challenging hill climbs dangerous.
Do I need permits to wheel at Angostura Reservoir?
You need a valid South Dakota parks pass and must follow all OHV regulations. Contact South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks for current requirements and any seasonal restrictions.
How gnarly are the hill climbs everyone talks about?
The steepest climbs are legit technical with loose rock and exposure. Expect to use low-range, possibly winch assistance, and have a spotter for the worst sections.
Can I get cell service if something goes wrong out there?
Cell service is spotty at best throughout the trail system. Bring a satellite communicator or let someone know your planned route and return time.
