Hungry Valley to Gorman — Los Padres Desert Ridge Run

Tehachapi ridge chaos where two ranges collide.

Moderate

Hungry Valley SVRA sits at the southern end of the Los Padres where the Tehachapi Mountains start bleeding into the Transverse Ranges, and the trail network pushing north toward Gorman gives you a genuine taste of that geological chaos. From the main staging area off I-5, you thread through Hungry Valley’s rolling sand washes and hardpack before climbing onto the ridge system above Quail Lake. The Snowy Peak Road spur is the gut-check — loose decomposed granite on a narrow shelf road with nothing but sky on the driver’s side and a long drop on the other. Condors are not uncommon here; they ride the thermals right off the ridge face.

Most of the main valley routes are doable in a bone-stock truck if you’re not pushing into the technical spur trails, but the ridge roads above 4,500 feet want a proper 4WD with a locker and decent ground clearance. Spring is ideal — the wildflowers go off after a wet winter and the temperature is right. Summer bakes this place. No permit required for day use beyond the standard SVRA fee. Water is nonexistent past the staging area, so tank up. Dispersed camping is available throughout the SVRA. Signal drops to zero once you leave the valley floor.
