Mickelson Trail Black Hills Technical Connector

Black Hills mining country technical challenge

Difficult

The George S. Mickelson Trail follows 109 miles of abandoned railroad grade from Deadwood to Edgemont, but the real adventure lies in the unmarked 4×4 connector roads that branch off into the hills where miners once hauled gold ore to the railway. These technical spurs access abandoned mining sites, ghost towns, and remote sections of the trail system through steep, rocky terrain that challenges even experienced drivers. The connector near Rochford climbs through old mining claims where rusted equipment still dots the landscape.

Moderate to difficult technical challenge requiring solid 4WD with skid plates and good tires for the rocky climbs and descents. Summer through early fall provides best conditions, though snow can linger in higher elevations into May. Trail pass required for the main Mickelson Trail but not for the mining access roads. Bring recovery gear and extra water—these spurs get remote fast. The payoff includes access to genuine Black Hills backcountry and historical sites most tourists never see, plus connection points to continue deeper into the hills.
