Black Hills National Forest Iron Creek Dispersed Sites
Multiple dispersed sites along Iron Creek and its tributaries, accessed via Forest Roads 231 and 345 south of Hill City. Sites range from roadside pull-offs to more secluded spots requiring short hikes. Most have established fire rings and decent privacy under mature ponderosa pines. The creek runs strong in spring but can dry to pools by late summer — always treat water before drinking.
The main access roads are suitable for most vehicles, but some of the better sites require high-clearance for rocky creek crossings and rutted spurs. Popular with Black Hills locals on weekends but quieter mid-week. Watch for seasonal fire restrictions and be prepared for afternoon thunderstorms during summer months.
