Mount Rushmore National Memorial
The four presidential faces carved into granite tower 60 feet tall on Mount Rushmore’s southeast face. Multiple viewing areas offer different perspectives — the Grand View Terrace provides the classic straight-on shot, while the Presidential Trail loops closer to the base for dramatic upward angles. The visitor center and museum add context, but the real draw is seeing Borglum’s massive sculpture against the Black Hills backdrop.
Parking fills early during summer peak season. The memorial stays open year-round, though winter brings snow and ice to the trails. Evening programs include dramatic lighting of the sculpture. Iron Mountain Road (SD-16A) provides the famous tunnel-framed views approaching from the south.
