Palmer Creek Road

Black Hills mining road with creek crossings and history.

Moderate

Palmer Creek Road snakes 12 miles through dense ponderosa pine forest in the northern Black Hills, following an old mining track that served the Palmer Gulch gold claims from the 1870s. The route starts near Rochford and climbs steadily through rocky terrain, crossing Palmer Creek multiple times before reaching the remnants of stamp mill foundations and prospect holes that mark the end of the road. You’ll navigate through narrow granite outcrops and ford the creek at least six times, with the final crossing requiring careful line selection during spring runoff.

This moderate trail demands high-clearance 4WD and decent ground clearance for the rock gardens between miles 7-9. Best tackled May through October when creek levels are manageable and snow has cleared from the higher elevations around 6,000 feet. No permits required, but fuel up in Hill City as it’s 40 miles to the nearest services. The payoff is solitude in some of the Black Hills’ least-traveled country, plus legitimate camping spots near the old mining sites where you can dig into South Dakota’s gold rush history.
