Black Hills Backcountry Byway – Rochford to Mystic
Ghost town connector through mining country
This forgotten mining road connects two ghost towns through the heart of the Black Hills, following Rapid Creek upstream past abandoned gold claims and collapsing mine headframes. The route climbs through dense Ponderosa stands where elk still use the old mining cuts as travel corridors, then drops into Mystic where the stone foundations of the 1880s stamp mill still stand beside the creek. The technical challenge comes at Silver Creek crossing — a rocky ford that’s claimed more than one oil pan when drivers hit it too fast.
Difficult rating due to several creek crossings, loose rock climbs, and narrow shelf roads with significant drop-offs. Stock 4WD with skid plates essential, aggressive tread tires recommended for the granite sections. Best run June through October when creek levels are manageable. No permits needed but this is within National Forest boundaries — respect closures during fire season. Dispersed camping available but pack out everything. This is real Black Hills country, the kind the tourist buses never see.
