Middle Fork Clearwater Technical Challenge
Extreme logging road through Idaho's deepest wilderness.
This gnarly logging road follows the Middle Fork Clearwater deeper into Idaho’s backcountry than most sane people venture, crossing sliderock fields and navigating washouts that would make a mountain goat nervous. Built to access virgin timber stands in the 1960s, the route climbs through old-growth cedar groves and across granite benches where spring snowmelt turns every drainage into a torrent. The infamous Three Sisters crossing at mile 18 demands precise wheel placement between house-sized boulders — one mistake puts you in the river.
Expert rating isn’t exaggerated — this trail eats stock 4x4s for breakfast and demands serious technical driving skills. Lockers, skid plates, and winch are mandatory, plus carry recovery gear and spare parts. June through September only when snow clears at higher elevations, and even then check conditions as washouts happen regularly. No permits needed on Nez Perce National Forest land. Rewards include pristine steelhead water and camping spots that see maybe a dozen visitors per year.
