Rochford Road

Rochford Road (Forest Road 231) follows the original supply route to the 1880s gold camp of Rochford, winding 12 miles through dense ponderosa forest from Hill City toward Mystic. The ghost town itself is mostly foundations and mine tailings now, but the road passes active placer claims, abandoned cabins, and the kind of hidden gulches where prospectors still work weekend claims. Moonshine Gulch and Rapid Creek crossings mark the halfway point, where clear mountain water runs over granite bedrock polished smooth by decades of mining activity.

This is moderate difficulty — rocky sections and creek crossings require 4WD with decent ground clearance, especially during spring runoff. The Forest Service maintains it minimally, so expect washouts and deadfall. No permits required for the road, but respect private mining claims. Best season is late spring through early fall when snow doesn’t block the higher elevations. Perfect for overlanders who want Black Hills history without the crowds — you’ll have this piece of mining heritage mostly to yourself.
