Transpantaneira (MT-060)

Wildlife highway through world's largest wetland

Moderate

The Transpantaneira runs 90 miles into the heart of the Pantanal, crossing 126 wooden bridges—some barely wider than your vehicle—over channels teeming with caimans and capybaras. This isn’t technical driving, but it’s pure adventure: cattle crossing the road at dawn, giant otters playing in roadside pools, and jaguars that treat the highway as their personal hunting ground. The road dead-ends at Porto Jofre on the Cuiabá River, where the real Pantanal begins.

Any 4×4 can handle the graded dirt surface during dry season (May-September), but wet season turns it into a muddy nightmare requiring serious ground clearance and diff locks. Bring mosquito nets, plenty of water, and a good cooler—temperatures hit 100°F+ and there’s minimal shade. Fuel is available at a few fazendas along the route. This isn’t about conquering technical terrain; it’s about experiencing the world’s greatest wildlife spectacle from behind the wheel.
