Forest Road 45 to Rogue River Gorge — Crater Lake Rim to Union Creek via Prospect Ridge

Forest Road 45 peels off Oregon Highway 62 south of Crater Lake and climbs into the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest through stands of old-growth Shasta red fir that survived the 1979 Wheeler Fire scar still visible on the ridge. The route traces the high ground above the Upper Rogue River corridor, crosses several unnamed seasonal creek drainages on deteriorating culvert bridges, and eventually drops down to the Union Creek area where the Rogue cuts through a 20-foot-wide natural lava gorge — a slot canyon in volcanic basalt that most visitors see only from the highway pullout. The road surface is native volcanic gravel with embedded pumice, loose on the steeper pitches.
This is a moderate high-clearance route — a capable stock truck or SUV can handle it dry, but pumice gravel gets slick when wet and the creek crossings become problematic during May snowmelt. No permit required. Best season is July through October; the road may hold snow into late June above 5,500 feet. Fuel and food in Crater Lake Junction or Prospect, both within 15 miles. No formal campgrounds on FR 45 itself, but dispersed camping is permitted in the Rogue River-Siskiyou NF outside posted restrictions. Cell service disappears quickly once you’re off OR-62.

The water crossings are real — small seasonal drainages that are passable but present, so know what your rig's clearance looks like at the belly. For fuel, Prospect is your last stop; it's a small town with limited hours, so top off before you head up toward Crater Lake's south rim.
