Oregon Trail Ruts Road (Guernsey)
Follow wagon ruts carved by 400,000 emigrants
At Guernsey, Wyoming, half a million wagon wheels carved ruts five feet deep into solid limestone—the deepest Oregon Trail remnants anywhere. The back road from Register Cliff winds through private ranches and BLM land, following the actual pioneer route past abandoned homesteads and Native American petroglyphs. Register Rock bears names carved by emigrants in the 1840s, while the infamous ‘Devil’s Backbone’ ridge forced wagons to single file through terrain that still challenges modern vehicles.
This route demands respect for private property and historical significance. Gates stay locked during calving season (March-May), and landowners have zero tolerance for trespassing. High-clearance vehicles handle most sections, but wet clay turns the trail impassable. Summer heat is brutal—carry water for both vehicle and passengers. The experience connects modern overlanders with the ultimate American migration story. Best visited April through October with permission from local ranchers.
