Spruce Woods Provincial Park — Spirit Sands Desert Track to Devils Punch Bowl Loop

Sand dunes and sinkholes in the heart of Manitoba.

Moderate

Manitoba has a desert. It’s not big, but it’s real — the Spirit Sands in Spruce Woods Provincial Park are active sand dunes left behind by glacial Lake Agassiz, and the two-track that works through the pine barrens toward the dune field is as surprising as terrain gets on the prairies. The main overland line runs from the Kiche Manitou campground area southwest toward the open dune faces, then loops back via the Devils Punch Bowl — a karst sinkhole lake ringed by cottonwoods that sits below the surrounding terrain like someone punched a hole in the earth. Sand is the primary surface challenge here; loose and deep in the open sections, the trail demands proper tire pressure management and momentum control.

Difficulty is solidly moderate — the sand sections will swallow a stock crossover but a proper 4WD with aired-down all-terrains handles it without drama. No serious mechanical obstacles, but getting stuck in loose sand alone is its own problem. The park has a permit system for vehicle access on the backcountry tracks; check with Manitoba Parks before arrival. Best season is May through October — the sand is actually more manageable when slightly damp after rain. Fuel in Carberry, 20 minutes north on Highway 5.
