Turtle Mountain Provincial Forest Backcountry Loop

The Turtle Mountain Provincial Forest stretches across the Canadian border, but its North Dakota section offers some of the state’s most challenging backcountry driving. This network of logging roads and hunting trails winds through dense aspen and oak forests, crossing Willow Creek multiple times before climbing to the International Peace Garden overlooks. The route connects Forest Service Road 253 with the old CCC camp ruins near Lake Metigoshe, passing through terrain that swallows GPS signals and tests ground clearance on rocky creek beds.

Moderate difficulty with a few technical water crossings that can turn nasty after spring snowmelt or summer storms. Stock 4WD with skid plates recommended, plus recovery gear and a good map since cell service disappears completely. Best tackled May through October when the roads aren’t gumbo mud. The payoff is genuine wilderness solitude, excellent dispersed camping spots, and some of the best wildlife viewing in North Dakota. Expect to see moose, black bear, and migrating waterfowl.
