Pembina Valley Provincial Park — Windygates Escarpment Road to Rock Glen Fossil Beds
Badlands fossils and clay that bites back.
Southern Manitoba doesn’t look like it has any teeth until you drop into the Pembina River valley. The Windygates escarpment road descends sharply from the prairie table into a world of eroded clay coulees, exposed shale banks, and cottonwood river flats that look nothing like the flat province that outsiders imagine. Rock Glen — technically just across the Manitoba-North Dakota line in concept but accessible from the Manitoba side via the valley road — exposes Cretaceous marine shale with shark teeth and bivalve fossils washing out of the cutbanks after every rain. The valley floor track follows the Pembina River through tight timber and over seasonal fords that can go knee-deep in spring. The clay surfaces here turn to grease in wet weather and will swallow a truck faster than you’d believe.
Moderate difficulty in dry conditions, expert-level in rain — that clay is genuinely unforgiving. A high-clearance 4×4 with decent mud tires is the minimum; lockers earn their keep in the wet valley-floor sections. Best run late July through September when the river fords are low and the clay has a chance to firm. No services in the valley — fuel in Manitou or Morden. Cell service disappears on the descent. This is a legitimate geological and scenic gem that almost nobody outside southern Manitoba overlanders knows about, and that’s exactly why it’s worth doing.
