Jicarilla Nation Forest Road 8
Hidden high country of the Jicarilla Nation
Forest Road 8 cuts through the heart of the Jicarilla Apache Nation, climbing through aspen groves and pine forests to Stone Lake, a hidden gem at 8,200 feet. The route starts near Dulce and winds through traditional hunting grounds, passing Horse Lake and navigating several seasonal creek crossings that can turn treacherous during spring snowmelt or summer monsoons.
This moderate to difficult route requires high-clearance 4WD and tribal permits available at the Jicarilla Game and Fish office in Dulce. Best tackled June through September when snow clears the high country. Expect mud holes, loose rock sections, and water crossings up to 18 inches deep. Dispersed camping allowed with permits, but respect sacred sites and hunting seasons. You’ll earn solitude in some of New Mexico’s most untouched mountain country.
