Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge Fire Road Network
Lowcountry marsh roads through pristine refuge
Pinckney Island’s 14-mile fire road system cuts through 4,053 acres of pristine Lowcountry habitat where the Colleton River meets Port Royal Sound. These maintained dirt roads, originally built for marsh management and wildlife observation, wind past tidal pools, ancient shell middens, and stands of live oaks draped in Spanish moss. The main spine road runs the island’s length, with spurs branching off to observation blinds and the historic Pinckney mansion ruins overlooking the sound.
Easy driving for any high-clearance vehicle, though the roads can get muddy during king tides and summer thunderstorms. No permits required, but the refuge closes at sunset and hunting seasons restrict access. Best visited during spring and fall migrations when the roads provide front-row seats to massive waterfowl movements. Dispersed camping isn’t allowed, but nearby Hunting Island State Park offers developed sites. What you get is solitude among some of South Carolina’s most untouched coastal wilderness.
