Marais des Cygnes River Timber Trail
Bottomland timber roads through Civil War history
The Marais des Cygnes River Timber Trail follows old logging roads through the most extensive hardwood bottomlands left in Kansas, where 200-year-old cottonwoods tower over creek channels that haven’t changed since the Border War days of the 1850s. Starting near Trading Post, the route winds through private timber claims and state wildlife areas, crossing Mill Creek at a concrete ford built by the WPA in 1937. The trail passes the site of the 1858 Marais des Cygnes Massacre, where pro-slavery raiders killed five Free State men—a largely forgotten chapter of Bleeding Kansas history.
This easy to moderate route requires only high-clearance 2WD in dry conditions, but spring floods can make the creek crossings impassable for weeks. Best tackled in fall when the hardwood canopy explodes in color and the mosquitoes finally die off. Summer brings oppressive humidity and ticks thick enough to darken your socks. The trail offers several primitive camping spots along the river, though landowner permission is required for some sections. Worth it for the solitude and some of the best bass fishing in eastern Kansas.
