Prairie Spirit Rail-Trail Extended

This 51-mile converted railroad bed cuts straight through the heart of the Osage Prairie, following the abandoned Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad from Ottawa to Humboldt. The crushed limestone surface makes for easy driving, but the real adventure lies in the side spurs and abandoned rail spurs that branch into native tallgrass prairie sections. Near Garnett, you can detour onto the old coal mining roads that honeycomb the area, some leading to forgotten mine entrances and prairie dog towns.

Easy difficulty suitable for any high-clearance vehicle, though the main trail accommodates stock SUVs in dry conditions. The limestone can get slick when wet, and spring flooding occasionally washes out low sections near the Marais des Cygnes River. Open year-round with no permits required. Excellent cell service along most sections. Multiple small towns offer resupply, and several primitive camping areas exist on adjacent public land. This is overlanding for history buffs—every mile tells the story of Kansas railroad boom and bust.
