Phantom Canyon Road — Gold Belt Tour from Cañon City to Cripple Creek

Railroad tunnels, gold history, tight canyon walls.

Moderate

Phantom Canyon Road climbs out of the Arkansas River valley south of Cañon City and immediately gets serious — the first few miles follow Eightmile Creek through a slot-like granite gorge where the roadbed traces the old Florence & Cripple Creek Railroad grade, tunnels still intact. You’ll pass through two original railroad tunnels bored into solid rock, cross a handful of plank bridges over the creek, and navigate switchbacks so tight a full-size truck with a long wheelbase will feel every inch of it. The grade tops out near Cripple Creek at around 9,500 feet, the once-booming gold mining town that produced over $800 million in ore during its heyday. This is a one-lane road with turnouts — patience and communication matter when you meet oncoming traffic in the canyon.

The route demands a high-clearance vehicle; the rocky sections through the gorge will bottom out a stock SUV if you’re moving fast. Not a trail for trailers. The road is typically open May through October — BLM closes it after significant snowfall and keeps it gated through mud season. No permit required, no fee. Fuel up in Cañon City before you drop in. Cell service disappears in the canyon and doesn’t return until you’re near Cripple Creek. The historic tunnels alone are worth the drive.
