Blue Ridge Parkway Mill Mountain Spur Road
Roanoke's star summit with ridgeline extensions
The Mill Mountain Spur climbs through oak and hickory forest from the Blue Ridge Parkway to Roanoke’s iconic neon star, visible for miles across the valley. This 2.3-mile paved climb transitions to gravel service roads that thread between communication towers and remnants of the 1940s fire tower. The real prize sits beyond the tourist areas — unmarked maintenance roads that follow the ridgeline west toward Poor Mountain, offering technical rock gardens and steep descents through second-growth timber cuts.
Easy to moderate difficulty with a few technical spots where erosion has carved deep ruts. Any vehicle with ground clearance handles the main route, but the extended ridge runs demand 4WD and skid plates. Best tackled April through October when gates stay open. No permits needed, though some spurs cross private timber land — respect posted boundaries. Fuel up in Roanoke before heading up. The payoff is panoramic views across the Roanoke Valley and access to dispersed camping spots that most tourists never see.
