Peters Mountain Trail
Historic ridge runner with stream challenges
Peters Mountain Trail follows an old logging railroad grade along West Virginia’s eastern border, tracing the ridge between the Greenbrier and James River watersheds. The route starts near Waiteville and runs 26 miles through mixed hardwood forest, passing abandoned homesteads and Civil War-era earthworks. The technical crux comes at Johns Creek, where flash floods have carved deep channels that require careful throttle control and proper tire placement to navigate safely.
This is moderate terrain suitable for stock high-clearance vehicles, though the creek crossings can become impassable after heavy rain. Spring and fall offer the best conditions, with spectacular wildflowers in April and peak foliage in October. No permits required, but check water levels at Johns Creek before committing to the full route. The trail offers excellent dispersed camping and a genuine taste of Appalachian backcountry—remote enough to feel isolated but accessible enough for weekend warriors.
