Pomme de Terre State Park Quarry Road Loop
Technical quarry climbs with Ozark lake views
Cut into the hillside above Pomme de Terre Lake, these abandoned quarry roads climb through Missouri’s limestone bluffs to forgotten rock cuts and equipment sites. The main technical challenge is Quarry Hill Climb, a steep limestone shelf road with loose rock that demands careful tire placement and momentum control. From the upper quarries, you’ll get sweeping views across the lake and into the rolling Ozark hills that stretch south toward Arkansas.
Difficult rating due to steep limestone grades and loose rock surfaces requiring experienced 4WD with good tires and skid plates. Wet limestone becomes treacherous – avoid after rain. Best tackled during dry fall and winter months when rock provides better grip. No permits required but respect private property boundaries. Pittsburg, Missouri has fuel and supplies 15 miles north. The payoff is classic Missouri Ozark scenery and the satisfaction of conquering some genuinely technical quarry roads that test both driver and machine.

Frequently asked questions
What kind of clearance and armor do I need for the quarry sections?
You need at least 9 inches of clearance with full skid plates - the limestone ledges and loose rock will beat up your undercarriage. A rear diff lock helps significantly on the steeper quarry climbs.
Why is October-March the best season for this trail?
Summer gets brutally hot on the exposed rock faces with no shade, and spring can be muddy with seasonal road closures. Fall through early spring gives you cooler temps and better traction on the limestone.
Do I need permits or pay fees to run this trail?
You'll pay the standard Missouri State Park entry fee (around $4-7 per vehicle). No special OHV permits required, but stay on designated roads only - the park rangers patrol regularly.
What's the most technical part of this loop?
The old quarry access roads have 30+ degree limestone ledges with loose rock - it's like climbing broken stairs in a Jeep. Take your time and use a spotter on the steepest sections.
Where can I camp if I want to make this a weekend trip?
The state park has developed campgrounds, but dispersed camping is allowed in designated areas along the trail - just pack out everything and follow Leave No Trace principles.
