John Bull Trail
Technical granite obstacle course above Big Bear
John Bull cuts through granite boulders and pine forest above Big Bear Lake, earning its reputation as one of Southern California’s most technical trails. The route starts innocuously near Fawnskin but quickly turns serious at the Wrecking Ball—a house-sized granite boulder that’s claimed countless oil pans and body panels. Beyond the ball, you’ll navigate steep granite slabs, tight squeezes between boulders, and off-camber sections that test every component of your rig.
This is expert-level wheeling requiring full armor, winch, and spotters for most obstacles. Lockers front and rear are essential, along with aggressive tires and recovery points. Summer crowds can create hours-long traffic jams at key obstacles. The 3-mile trail typically takes 4-6 hours with a capable group. What you earn is bragging rights on one of California’s most challenging technical routes and stunning views of Big Bear Valley from the granite summit.

Frequently asked questions
Can a stock 4Runner handle John Bull Trail?
Absolutely not. This trail requires modified 4WD with rock sliders, skid plates, and differential protection - stock vehicles will get damaged.
Is John Bull Trail open in winter?
No, snow typically closes access from November through April. Best conditions are May through October when granite slabs are dry.
Do I need permits to run John Bull Trail?
No permits required, but you need a valid Adventure Pass for parking at the trailhead in San Bernardino National Forest.
How bad is the Wrecking Ball obstacle?
It's the trail's crux - a steep granite face that's destroyed plenty of vehicles. Many groups winch or take the bypass if they're smart.
Can I get cell service if I break down?
Yes, cell coverage is decent throughout the trail since you're close to Big Bear Lake. Good thing, because people break stuff here regularly.
