Nevado del Tolima Volcanic Circuit
Volcanic moonscape meets thermal hell
The Nevado del Tolima circuit cuts through some of Colombia’s most dramatic volcanic terrain, climbing from cloud forest at 2,000 meters to alpine paramo at 4,200 meters. The route starts at Juntas village and winds through indigenous Pijao lands, past the Termales de Cañón hot springs, before hitting the technical rock sections that guard access to the volcano’s base camps. You’ll cross the Río Combeima multiple times and navigate loose volcanic scree that’ll test your traction control.
This is expert territory — stock vehicles won’t cut it. You need high-clearance 4WD, rock sliders, and skid plates for the boulder fields above 3,500 meters. The weather window is narrow: December to March for the upper reaches, though lower sections stay passable year-round. Carry chains for the paramo crossings and expect zero cell service above the treeline. What you get is raw volcanic wilderness, thermal springs that’ll cook you alive, and views across the entire Cordillera Central that’ll make you forget why you ever lived in cities.
