Velebit Mountain Paklenica Defense Line
War roads through karst canyons and history
These rough military access roads were carved during the 1990s Croatian Homeland War to supply defensive positions along the Velebit range. The route winds through the dramatic karst landscape of Paklenica National Park, past abandoned bunkers and artillery positions now being reclaimed by forest. The track follows the rim of Velika Paklenica canyon, offering vertigo-inducing views down limestone cliffs to the canyon floor 400 meters below. Key waypoints include the ruins of Tulove Grede observation post and the cave systems used as ammunition storage during the conflict.
Moderate to difficult depending on weather — the limestone can become glass-slick when wet, and fog rolls in without warning. High-clearance vehicle required; 4WD recommended for steep sections and rocky climbs. Best driven May through October when winter storms aren’t battering the exposed ridges. Can a stock Jeep Wrangler or Land Cruiser handle this without a lift?
A stock high-clearance 4WD with a solid skid plate is workable, but the karst rock surface is jagged and unforgiving on low-hanging components. A lift helps, but what matters more is locking diffs and a driver who knows their breakover angle.
When does the trail open and is snow a real issue?
May through October is the reliable window. At 4,593 ft max elevation, late spring snow and ice are possible in May, and October can turn wet and greasy fast. Don't push it outside that window without checking local conditions — Velebit weather shifts hard.

There are no services on trail — no water sources, no fuel, nothing. Starigrad is your last stop for fuel before you head up, and it's a small town so don't count on finding everything you need there. Carry all your water and plan for the full 28 miles being self-supported.
