Via Dinarica Mountain Trail – Bosnia and Herzegovina

Balkans wilderness at its rawest

Expert

The Via Dinarica Mountain Trail cuts through some of Europe’s wildest terrain, following shepherd tracks and wartime supply routes across Bosnia’s Dinaric Alps from Sutjeska National Park to the Croatian border near Livno. You’ll navigate the brutal karst landscape around Treskavica Mountain, ford the crystal-clear Neretva tributaries, and encounter villages like Lukomir where life hasn’t changed since medieval times—and where bullet holes in stone walls remind you this beauty came at a cost.

This is expert-level terrain demanding a fully-equipped expedition vehicle with rock sliders, skid plates, and serious recovery gear. Unmarked minefields still exist off established routes, so stay on marked trails religiously. Weather shifts fast in these mountains, and help is often a day’s drive away. June through September offers the best conditions, though even summer brings sudden storms. What you get is raw Balkans wilderness that makes the Alps look tame, plus encounters with locals who’ll share rakija and stories you won’t soon forget.
