Trans Euro Trail Eastern (TET-E) – Bulgaria Section

Bulgaria's most brutal TET section

Expert

The Bulgarian segment of the Trans Euro Trail Eastern cuts through the heart of the Rhodope Mountains, connecting ancient Roman roads with Communist-era mining tracks. This 280-kilometer section starts near Bansko and winds through forgotten villages like Dospat and Ardino, crossing the infamous Trigrad Gorge where the Trigradska River disappears underground. The route includes the notorious Devil’s Bridge crossing and climbs to 1,900 meters through the Wonderful Bridges rock formations, testing both navigation skills and vehicle capability on loose shale and narrow mountain ledges.

Expert-level difficulty demands full underbody protection, winch capability, and GPS redundancy as mobile coverage vanishes for hours. Best tackled May through September when snow clears the high passes, though expect mud bogs and washouts after spring rains. Fuel range of 400+ kilometers essential with jerry cans, as stations are scarce between Smolyan and Kardzhali. Water crossings number six, including one ford that’s claimed transmissions. The payoff: untouched mountain wilderness, medieval fortress ruins, and Bulgaria’s most challenging overland experience.
