The track from Tabora west toward Uvinza through Moyowosi and Kigosi Game Reserves is the kind of route that doesn’t appear on most maps and disappears entirely when the rains hit. Western Tanzania’s miombo woodland swallows this track for weeks at a time between November and May — rivers flood, black-cotton soil becomes impassable, and game rangers become your only company. When it’s dry, you’ll navigate shallow mbuga (seasonal swamp) crossings, elephant-churned mud wallows that have hardened into a lunar surface, and long stretches of deep sand under teak canopy. Buffalo, lion, hippo, and crocodile are present throughout. The route links the railway town of Tabora to Uvinza on the Malagarasi River, with no fuel, no lodges, and no rescue services between them.
Experienced expedition-level overlanding only. Two-vehicle minimum is not a suggestion here — it’s common sense. Fully built expedition 4WD with dual lockers, high-lift jack, extensive recovery gear, bush mechanic capability, and minimum five days of fuel, food, and water for each vehicle. No. A stock vehicle will get eaten alive by the black-cotton soil sections. You need a fully built expedition 4WD with a snorkel, high-lift jack, maxtrax or equivalent recovery boards, dual spare tires, and long-range fuel capacity — minimum 500 km range. Two-vehicle minimum is not a suggestion; it's survival math out here.
What happens if you try this outside June–October?
The black-cotton soil turns into axle-deep mud during the rainy season (November–May) and large sections become impassable even for built rigs. The route is effectively closed. People have been stuck for days waiting for ground to firm up.
Do you need a permit to drive through Moyowosi–Kigosi Game Reserve?

The black-cotton soil corridors between the game reserve boundaries are the worst — when even slightly damp they turn greasy and offer zero traction, and you can sink fast. Expect multiple recovery situations per day on the hard sections, river crossings with no marked depth gauges, and zero chance of outside help if something breaks.
Is there any place to fuel up between Tabora and Uvinza?
No. There is zero fuel, zero resupply, and zero infrastructure for the entire 300 km. Leave Tabora with a full tank plus jerry cans to cover at least 500 km total range, and carry all food, water filtration, and emergency supplies for the full 4–6 day duration.
