Mushroom Rock State Park Four Mile Creek Trail

Mushroom-shaped rocks in the Smoky Hills.

Moderate

The Mushroom Rock State Park Four Mile Creek Trail cuts through some of Kansas’s most bizarre geology, where Dakota Sandstone has weathered into towering mushroom-shaped formations that look like something from another planet. The unmaintained county road that leads to the main formations requires high-clearance vehicles to navigate the washouts and rocky sections, especially after spring rains turn Four Mile Creek into a flowing obstacle. The trail connects multiple rock formations including the famous Giant Mushroom and passes remnants of old homestead foundations.

This is moderate terrain requiring stock high-clearance 4WD during wet conditions, though dry summer months allow careful 2WD access. Spring through fall offers the best conditions, with wildflowers blooming around the formations in May and June. No permits needed for this day trip, but bring water since none is available. The payoff is photographing some of the most unique geological features in Kansas and exploring formations that have been tourist draws since the 1920s.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Subaru Outback handle the Four Mile Creek Trail?

Yes, a stock Outback should be fine since this trail only requires high-clearance 2WD. The limestone and dirt surface is manageable without 4x4, though take it easy over the rocky sections.

Is Mushroom Rock State Park open during winter months?

The park stays open year-round, but the trail is best April through October when weather conditions are more predictable. Winter can bring ice and mud that makes the limestone sections slippery.

Do I need to pay an entrance fee for Mushroom Rock State Park?

Yes, there's a daily vehicle permit fee required for Kansas state parks. You can pay at the self-service station or purchase an annual Kansas Parks Pass if you plan multiple visits.

What's the most challenging part of the Four Mile Creek Trail?

The water crossings at Four Mile Creek can be tricky depending on recent rainfall. The creek bed can get muddy and the limestone approaches can be slick when wet.

How reliable is cell phone service on the trail?

Cell service is spotty throughout most of the trail area. Don't count on having signal, especially in the lower creek areas between the rock formations.
