Mushroom Rock State Park Four Mile Creek Trail
Mushroom-shaped rocks in the Smoky Hills.
The Mushroom Rock State Park Four Mile Creek Trail cuts through some of Kansas’s most bizarre geology, where Dakota Sandstone has weathered into towering mushroom-shaped formations that look like something from another planet. The unmaintained county road that leads to the main formations requires high-clearance vehicles to navigate the washouts and rocky sections, especially after spring rains turn Four Mile Creek into a flowing obstacle. The trail connects multiple rock formations including the famous Giant Mushroom and passes remnants of old homestead foundations.
This is moderate terrain requiring stock high-clearance 4WD during wet conditions, though dry summer months allow careful 2WD access. Spring through fall offers the best conditions, with wildflowers blooming around the formations in May and June. No permits needed for this day trip, but bring water since none is available. The payoff is photographing some of the most unique geological features in Kansas and exploring formations that have been tourist draws since the 1920s.
