Kanopolis State Park Horsethief Canyon Technical Loop

Kansas rock crawling where outlaws once roamed

Difficult

Horsethief Canyon earned its name honestly—this maze of Dakota sandstone formations provided perfect hideouts for rustlers working the old cattle trails through central Kansas. The technical loop follows rocky jeep roads through the canyon system, with the crux being a steep sandstone ledge climb called Devil’s Backbone where you’ll need careful line choice to avoid high-centering on the exposed rock shelves that define this unique Kansas landscape carved by the Smoky Hill River.

This is a difficult trail requiring a capable 4WD with rock sliders and decent ground clearance—the sandstone shelves will punish stock vehicles. Aggressive tires and a spotter help on the technical climbs. Spring and fall are ideal when temperatures are moderate and the red rock contrasts beautifully with prairie grasses. No permits needed but stay on designated routes within the state park boundaries. What you get is legitimate technical rock crawling in a state most people think is pancake flat, plus some of Kansas’ most photogenic geology and a genuine taste of outlaw history in the stone hideouts.
