Wilson Lake Cross Timbers Loop

Limestone ledges in the Cross Timbers

Difficult

Wilson Lake’s Cross Timbers country offers some of Kansas’s most challenging 4×4 terrain, where post oak and blackjack forests grow from limestone shelves that’ll test your departure angles. The main technical section drops through Hell Creek drainage, with rock ledges, water crossings, and tight timber that demands careful line choice. This remnant ecosystem once stretched from Kansas to Texas, but only pockets remain around Wilson Lake’s 9,000-acre reservoir.

Difficult trail requiring high-clearance 4WD with skid plates and recovery gear. The limestone steps are sharp and unforgiving, and flash floods can turn creek crossings deadly. Late fall through early spring offers the best conditions when leaves are down and water levels stable. No permits needed for the forest roads, but respect private property boundaries. Lucas Creek and Minooka Park offer camping with amenities, or find dispersed spots on Corps land away from the water.
