Kellys Grade to Borrego Palm Canyon — Santa Rosa Mountains Desert Divide

Limestone shelf road into palm canyon country.

Difficult

Kellys Grade is one of those roads that earns its reputation before you even touch the descent. Dropping off Highway S22 near Borrego Springs, the shelf road winds down eroded limestone benches with sheer drop-offs to the east and the Coachella Valley shimmering in the distance. The route connects the high desert bench to Borrego Palm Canyon — home to one of California’s largest native California fan palm oases — threading through a landscape of ocotillo, cholla, and slot-canyon washes. The grade itself is loose, rocky, and uneven, with off-camber ledges that’ll punish any rig running street tires.

This isn’t a trail for second-guessing. High clearance and 4WD are mandatory; a locker helps on the steepest grade sections. Spring wildflower season (February–April) turns the bajada into something otherworldly, but flash flood risk in summer makes late fall through early spring the smart window. Borrego Springs is your fuel and water stop — no services on route. No permit required for the road itself, though the Palm Canyon trailhead sits inside Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Cell service is nonexistent once you drop off the grade.
