Black Canyon Road
Slot canyon adventure in the Anza-Borrego
Black Canyon Road carves a dramatic route through the heart of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, where towering canyon walls create a slot-like passage that barely accommodates a full-size vehicle. The trail follows an ancient Native American route through metamorphic rock formations, passing several natural springs and palm oases hidden in side canyons, including the famous Mortero Palms with its grinding holes carved into bedrock by Kumeyaay peoples.
Difficult rating due to extremely tight clearances and technical rock steps that demand precise wheel placement. High-clearance 4WD with rock sliders essential, plus a spotter for the tightest sections. November through March offers the best conditions, avoiding summer heat that can exceed 120°F. No permits required but check park conditions as flash floods can make the route impassable. The reward is access to some of California’s most pristine desert wilderness with world-class dispersed camping under star-filled skies.
