Pickett State Park Thompson Creek Gorge Technical Loop

Thompson Creek carved this technical loop through Pickett State Park’s sandstone plateau, creating a maze of natural bridges, rock shelters, and 40-foot waterfalls that challenge even experienced drivers. The route follows old CCC roads and logging tracks past Hazard Cave and through the Natural Bridge area, with multiple creek crossings and steep sandstone ledges requiring precise wheel placement. Rock crawling sections demand low-range work around Indian Rockhouse and Crystal Falls.

This difficult trail requires articulating 4WD with front and rear lockers, plus underbody armor for the inevitable rock contact. Late summer and fall offer the best conditions when creek levels drop, though expect some sections to remain permanently wet. No permits needed, but camping is restricted to established sites within the park. Fill up in Jamestown — the nearest fuel is 25 miles away. You’ll experience Tennessee’s most dramatic geology in near-solitude, with sandstone formations that rival Utah’s red rock country.
