Big South Fork Burnt Mill Bridge Historic Circuit
Coal mining heritage through sandstone canyons
The Burnt Mill Bridge Historic Circuit explores the industrial archaeology of Tennessee’s coal mining past through the rugged sandstone canyons of Big South Fork. This 16-mile loop connects the remnants of Company Store #2, the abandoned Zenith mining camp, and the historic Burnt Mill Bridge—a Depression-era WPA project that spans the gorge 150 feet above Station Camp Creek. The route follows old mining haul roads carved into cliffsides, with several technical rock ledges and off-camber sections that test both nerve and suspension articulation around Blue Heron.
Moderate to difficult trail requiring good ground clearance and recovery points—the sandstone can be greasy when wet. Spring and fall offer the best conditions and clearest water crossings at Station Camp Creek. The route passes through both Tennessee and Kentucky sections of the recreation area, but no permits needed for day use. Camping available at designated sites near the river. This trail delivers genuine Appalachian history with enough technical challenges to keep things interesting without destroying your rig.
