Twin Arches Loop Road
Sandstone arches and technical rock crawling
The Twin Arches Loop Road snakes through Big South Fork’s sandstone country, connecting two massive natural arches that tower 135 feet above the forest floor. This Daniel Boone National Forest route follows old logging roads and creek bottoms, with the gnarliest section between Charit Creek and Station Camp Creek where exposed bedrock and loose boulders test your line choice. The reward is camping beneath some of Kentucky-Tennessee’s most impressive geological formations.
Difficult rating earns its keep – stock vehicles will struggle with the rock gardens and steep creek approaches. Lockers and 33-inch tires minimum, plus full skid protection for the sandstone ledges. Spring and fall offer the best conditions when creeks run clear and temperatures stay comfortable. No permits required for the route itself, but overnight camping needs advance reservations. Pack plenty of water – natural sources require treatment. This is archetypal Appalachian adventure territory.
