Daniel Boone National Forest Forest Service Road 192 Bandy Creek Circuit

Technical sandstone crawling through mining history

Difficult

Forest Service Road 192 cuts through some of the most rugged terrain in the Daniel Boone National Forest, winding past sandstone bluffs and through creek beds that challenged coal miners and loggers for over a century. The route connects Bandy Creek Campground to the remote O&W Railroad Bridge ruins, passing natural rock arches and abandoned mining equipment scattered through the hollows. Multiple creek crossings and rocky climbs test vehicle clearance and traction, especially around the notorious Devils Den rock garden that’s claimed more than a few oil pans.

This is a difficult trail requiring high-clearance 4WD and skid plates, with several sections that can become impassable after heavy rains. Rock crawling experience helps navigate the technical sections, and a winch isn’t a bad idea for the steeper climbs. Best tackled in late spring through early fall when creek levels are predictable. No permits required, but camping is restricted to designated areas. The reward is access to some of Tennessee’s most pristine backcountry and a genuine taste of Appalachian mining history without the crowds of the main tourist areas.
