Nantahala National Forest Wayah Road
High peaks, higher stakes
Forest Road 69 climbs from Wayah Gap to the fire tower through some of the most technical high-country terrain North Carolina offers. This 12-mile route starts innocently enough but quickly turns nasty with loose rock, off-camber sections, and steep grades that’ll have you questioning your line choice around Wine Spring Bald. The payoff comes at 5,342-foot Wayah Bald, where the stone tower offers 360-degree views of the Blue Ridge escarpment stretching into Tennessee and Georgia.
High-clearance 4WD mandatory for the technical sections, though the first few miles accommodate brave 2WD drivers. Spring brings wildflowers but also washouts; summer offers the best conditions despite afternoon thunderstorms that turn rock to soap. No dispersed camping allowed, but nearby Standing Indian Campground makes a solid base camp. Fuel up in Franklin—this is serious backcountry with zero services once you leave pavement.
