Fires Creek Rim Road

Fires Creek Rim Road is a gnarly mountain route that follows the ridgeline between Fires Creek and Shooting Creek valleys in the remote Nantahala backcountry. The trail starts innocuously enough as Forest Service Road 340, but quickly turns technical as it climbs toward Weatherman Bald through a series of rocky switchbacks and exposed ledges. At Mile 6, the infamous “Rock Garden” section tests your approach angles and tire placement as you navigate house-sized boulders scattered across the narrow roadway.
This is a difficult route that demands experienced drivers and well-built rigs with rock sliders, skid plates, and aggressive tires. The exposed ridge sections can be treacherous in high winds or ice, making spring through fall your only realistic windows. No services for 40 miles, so carry extra fuel, water, and recovery gear. Multiple dispersed camping spots along the rim offer spectacular sunrise views across the Smokies, but you’ll earn every one of them. This trail separates weekend warriors from serious mountain runners.

Can a stock 4Runner or Jeep Wrangler run Fires Creek Rim Road?
Not without modifications. This trail needs a proper lift, skid plates, rock sliders, and aggressive all-terrain or mud-terrain tires at minimum. A stock rig will get hung up and damaged on the rock gardens along the rim.
When does Fires Creek Rim Road open and close for the season?
May through September is your window. The high ridge sections hold snow and ice well into spring, and fall storms can make the exposed rock sections seriously sketchy. Don't push the shoulder seasons here.
Do you need a permit to run Fires Creek Rim Road?
