Forest Service Road 2281 Joyce Kilmer Memorial Loop
Gateway to cathedral forest giants
FS Road 2281 punches deep into the Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock Wilderness boundary, following Little Santeetlah Creek through cathedral groves of 400-year-old tulip poplars and hemlocks. This rugged access route was originally a logging railroad grade, and you’ll still find remnants of steel cables and machinery from the 1920s timber operations scattered in the undergrowth. The road crosses Santeetlah Creek five times, with the fourth crossing requiring careful spotting during high water periods from spring runoff or heavy rains.
Expect difficult conditions requiring articulation, rock sliders, and aggressive tread. The creek crossings can turn treacherous after storms, and several rocky switchbacks demand precise wheel placement. Late summer through early fall offers the most stable conditions, but you’ll share the area with serious hikers heading to the memorial forest. No camping along the road itself, but dispersed sites exist near the wilderness boundary. This is your ticket to experiencing some of the most humbling old-growth forest left in the Southeast.
