Serra dos Órgãos Teresópolis Circuit

Granite spires and Atlantic Forest technical climbs

Difficult

The jagged granite spires of Serra dos Órgãos rise like cathedral organs from the Atlantic Forest, giving this mountain range its name and this circuit its reputation. The route winds through Teresópolis and Petrópolis via dirt roads and rocky climbs, passing the base of Dedo de Deus (God’s Finger) and Pedra do Sino peaks. Technical sections include the steep Barreira descent and multiple stream crossings through dense forest canopy where howler monkeys announce your passage.

This is serious mountain terrain requiring high-clearance 4WD and experience with steep grades and loose rock. Wet season (December-March) turns dirt sections into muddy nightmares, so stick to dry months April through September. The payoff is camping under some of Brazil’s most iconic peaks, cold mountain air, and waterfalls that’ll shock your system awake. Fuel up in Teresópolis — mountain stations are sparse and expensive.
