Estrada Real – Ouro Preto to Tiradentes Gold Route
Colonial gold route through mountain mining towns
This section of Brazil’s legendary Estrada Real follows the original 18th-century mule train route that carried gold from Minas Gerais mines to Rio’s ports. The track passes through São João del-Rei and dozens of colonial towns frozen in time, with stretches of original stone paving that’ll rattle your teeth loose. Key waypoints include the preserved colonial architecture of Tiradentes and the steep descent into Ouro Preto, where narrow cobblestone streets weren’t built for modern vehicles.
Most of the route runs on maintained dirt and gravel suitable for any high-clearance vehicle, but the historic cobblestone sections through town centers demand careful tire placement and patience with local traffic. Best tackled in dry season (May-September) when dirt sections aren’t muddy quagmires. This isn’t about technical challenge — it’s about rolling through 300 years of Brazilian history while camping in mountains that once made Portugal rich beyond measure.
