Serra do Cipó Chapadão Diamond Mining Circuit

Diamond rush ghosts in quartzite peaks

Difficult

The old diamond mining roads above Conceição do Mato Dentro snake through the Serra do Cipó’s quartzite peaks, following routes carved by garimpeiros in the 1880s rush. This 68-kilometer circuit connects abandoned settlements like Capivara and links to active mining operations where locals still pan for stones in the Rio Cipó tributaries. The route passes the ruined Fazenda do Cipó, where Portuguese colonists first discovered diamonds in 1729, and climbs to the Chapadão plateau at 1,400 meters.

Difficult rating earned — loose rock, steep grades, and technical creek crossings demand experienced drivers with modified 4x4s. Dry season only (May through September) when rivers are passable. No permits needed but respect private mining claims. Camping possible at several fazenda ruins, but bring all water and fuel from Conceição do Mato Dentro. What you get: authentic mining heritage, stunning cerrado landscapes, and the thrill of following century-old prospector routes through some of Brazil’s most rugged country.
